Fiber tracking in the brain

Got some new sample data for Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). Simply put, it is a technique that can be used to display the brain’s white matter fiber bundles.

Without going into the details of fractional anisotropy, water diffusion can be used to grab the orientation of the fibers in the brain. By processing diffusion images with software like BrainVoyager QX, very nice 3D representations of fiber orientation can be made.

DTI 6 gradients

The screenshot gives an impression of such images… This has been done in a fairly simple setting (6 gradients). For the next days I will be experimenting with more complex settings (32 gradients and HARDI data).
