Saving Word file to image in 2 simple steps

I work on Mac OS X and sometimes for a scientific article I need to convert an MS Word document (mostly a flowchart) to a figure for a publication. For example, take this flowchart from the PRISMA statement (an evidence-based minimum set of items for reporting in systematic reviews and meta-analyses). Obviously you can take a screenshot, but this has a very bad resolution and will look horrible after publication. Here is how I do it:

Step 1
Save the Word document as a PDF.

Step 2
Open the PDF (I simple use the Preview app which is installed by default) and save it as an image. You can choose TIFF, PNG, JPG, and even change the resolution directly to 300dpi.

Now if you like you can also crop your image according to your needs, e.g. to remove white space above and below the figure. And there you are: a high-quality image from your Word document!
